Trip to Topeka.

For the weekend of June 21st and 22nd, two AFS students from the Wichita area came to visit: Francesca from Italy and Martina from Austria. Since Tig had to ship a hedgehog, we decided to take them for a side trip to Topeka on Saturday the 21st.

Our first stop, after dropping off the hedgehog, was the Cracker Barrel, for breakfast. We learned that they don't have pancakes in Italy. From left to right, that's Jane, Seph, Francesca, and Martina.

Our next stop was to see the capitol building in Topeka. Wow, is it ever big!

Here's a closer picture of the girls on the steps.

The website said it was open on the weekend, but it wasn't. The doors are sure pretty.

Next, we took a picture by a mini Statue of Liberty statue that was on the capitol grounds.

Next we met a friendly state trooper, who was doing an exhibition of the "wear your seatbelts" truck at Gage Park.

It was free day at the zoo, so we decided to take advantage!

A big gorilla came down off the rocks to say, "Hi."

It was so hot, the girls were contemplating diving in the fountain.

Tig got excited that they had an echinops telifairi (lesser tenrec).

We were all really happy when the mist came on in the rain forest.

This little critter came out of the underbrush and at one point was less than a foot away from us!

Seph was happy to pet a goat.

On the way out, Jane and Francesca contributed handprints to a train sculpture that was being decorated.

The rose garden at Gage Park- with over 500 varieties of roses.

Next we went to the Mulvane Art Museum. It was closed to prepare for a new exhibition, so we enjoyed the outside sculptures.

Seph checks out an interesting sculpture.

Martina and Jane contemplate a fountain sculpture.

Martina & Francesca pose with Lance, Zury, Tig & Seph.

Martina and Francesca get ready to say goodbye at the close of a wonderful weekend! We sure enjoyed their visit!
